3-Blade Versus 2-Blade Propellers Flight Tests
Performed on January 25, 2002 in Nashville, TN
Comparison of 3-bladed vs 2-bladed propellers on Normal Aspirated 1968 Cessna 337, N2636S
Configuration: Full fuel tanks, 2 passengers, and baggage for both flights.
First flight: 3-bladed props
Second flight: 2-bladed props
Pilot: Steve Lloyd
Tests Results Recorded by Owen Bell
RESULTS:
3 Bladed M.T. Props showed significant advantages vs 2 Bladed McCauley Props
Noise Reduction at the same power settings
1 Decibel less noise during Taxi
3 Decibel less noise during Climb
4-5 Decibel less noise during cruise at 6500 ft
Performance improvements at the same power settings
~3 seconds less ground roll on take off run
Propeller Synchronization much easier to maintain during climb and cruise
Rate of climb = no significant change
Cruise speed = no significant change
Weight reduction
~20 lbs lighter (~10 lbs per propeller)
Time between propeller overhauls
Significantly longer (thus reducing the hourly operating costs)
6 years or 2000 hours vs 5 years and 1500 hours
Appearance
Upgraded, modern, and stately
In case of propeller strike
Increased safety and less potential damage
Less likely to bend prop flange or break crankshaft
Summary: 3-Bladed M.T. Propellers were flight tested and compared to 2-Bladed McCauley Propellers and found to significantly reduce weight, noise, and ground roll time to take-off. There was no significant change found in rate of climb or cruise speed. Overhauls are needed less frequently (every 6 years/2000 hrs vs 5 years/1500 hrs) thereby reducing overall operating costs. In addition, the 3-Bladed props are less prone to bend or breakage in case of propeller strike therefore increasing safety and decreasing potential other damage.
